Question 1.
Read the following passage.
(A) Drawing one of the strongest links yet between global warming and human conflict, researchers said on March 02, 2015 that an extreme drought in Syria between 2006 and 2009 was most likely due to climate change, and that it was a factor in the violent uprising that began there in 2011.
(B) The drought was the worst in the country in modern times and the scientists laid the blame for it on a century-long trend towards warmer and drier conditions in the eastern Mediterranean, rather than on the natural climate variability.
(C) The researchers said this trend matched computer simulations as how the region responds to the increase in the greenhouse-gas emissions and the cause appeared to be due to two factors-weakening of winds that bring moisture-laden air from the Mediterranean and hotter temperatures that cause more evaporation.
(D) Colin P. Kelley, the lead author of the study, said he and his colleagues found that while Syria and the rest of the region known as the Fertile Crescent were normally subject to periodic dry periods, “a drought this severe was two to three times more likely” because of the increasing aridity in the region.
(E) Dr. Kelley, who did the research while at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and is now at the University of California at Santa Barbara, said there was no apparent natural cause for the warming and drying trend, which developed over the last 100 years, when humans’ effect on climate has been the greatest.
(F) Some social scientists policymakers and others have previously suggested that the drought played a role in the Syrian unrest, and the researchers addressed this as well, saying the drought “had a catalytic effect”.
(G) They cited studies that showed the extreme dryness, combined with other factors, including misguided agricultural and water use policies of the Syrian government, causing crop failures that led to the migration of as many as 1.5 million people from rural to urban areas. This added to the social stress that eventually resulted in the uprising against Bashar al-Assad in March 2011.
(H) What began as civil war has since escalated into a multifaceted conflict, with at least 2,00,000 deaths. The United Nations estimates that half of the country’s 22 million people have been affected, with more than six million having been internally displaced. The researchers said that there were many factors that contributed to the chaos. The US military has described climate change as a “threat multiplier” that may lead to a greater instability. Earlier studies trying to show a link between climate change and conflict have been rebutted by some scientists, and it is not clear how far this new study will go toward settling the issue.
(I) Thomas Bernauer, a professor of Political Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich who has been critical of some earlier studies, said he was sceptical about this one as well. “The evidence for the claim that this drought contributed to the outbreak of civil war in Syria is very speculative and not backed up by robust scientific evidence,” he wrote in an email.
(J) Mark A. Cane, an author of the study and a scientist at Lamont-Doherty, which is part of Columbia University, defended the work. “I think there’s a really good case here “he said. “But I think we’ve tried to explain that the connection from an extraordinary climate event to conflict is complex and certainly involves other factors.”

As a result of this agricultural crisis, by 2011, 1.5 million Syrians were forced to move from rural areas to cities in search of livelihoods. Dear Uncle
Thank you for your letter. I was glad to read that you have offered to get me a pet for my birthday. Uncle, thank-you very much for your loving concern. Uncle before you buy any pet for me, May I please recommend you a pet of my choice?
Uncle,! would love to have a dog as my pet, as most of my friends have them. Secondly, uncle as you know my father is always on a touring job, so only we two kids and mom are left all alone at home, which is quite risky. And, moreover our house remains almost vacant when Papa goes on tour, Mamma to her teaching job and Kajal and I go to school. Nowadays, in our locality lot of burglaries are taking place during the daytime. In that case, if we have a dog or a small puppy, it will guard our house in our absence. And uncle, don’t worry, I will personally take care of it properly. I will feed it, bathe it, and take it out for walks in the evenings. We will treat it as a family member.
Moreover, before receiving your letter, we were insisting mom that we should buy a dog. Please, all of you join me on my birthday on coming Sunday. We all want to spend time with you all.
Regards to you and Aunty and love to Neeru and Vinay.
Yours lovingly

Question 6.
Advancement in Science and Technology has made life more convenient and comfortable. Describe “one day” in the life of a common man, highlighting the significance of the above statement.
Answer:
From morning till bedtime, scientific inventions fill our lives with comforts. Even a single day of a common man is filled with so many gadgets that we hardly appreciate it. A person’s morning is greeted with an alarm. Whether it is an alarm clock or a mobile phone, we are no longer awakened with the cock crowing. Our first sight is that of a gadget followed by another gadget, i.e., lights. Once you get up, you tend to visit the bathroom. Modem bathrooms are a haven of technological advancements. Geysers, hair dryers, showers and bath tubs – all entail a touch of science. Travelling to your place of education or work is also a scientific ride. Whether you take a bus, a train or a private car, it is science that gives you access to these comfortable means of transport. In school or at work, we face an array of devices.
White boards or digiboards, laptops, projectors, even the fans and lights that we use are inventions of science. We cannot think of working or studying without these gadgets. Lunch time means cooking, modem kitchens are filled with appliances. From vegetable cutters to pressure cookers, juicers to grinders, it is science that has become our chef. Washing utensils and clothes has become convenient due to the presence of dish washers and washing machines. Cleaning the floor is easier for us due to vacuum cleaners and advanced mops. Even the soaps and detergent powders that we use are so designed by science that they cut down on dirt completely. Mobiles have become mandatory; in fact, some individuals have more than one phone for work or leisure. With digitalisation, money vending machines are a common sight. Online shopping has become a reality and pharmacy can be bought at finger tips. Thus, science and technology has made our lives comfortable indeed.

Travelling has numerous benefits. It helps widen our knowledge, entertain and exposes us to new and beautiful locations. Last month, I went to an island of Indonesia named Belitung. It is a tranquil place perfect for a solo visit. It is located on the east coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. There are many towns and villages within the island.
The largest town is called Tanjung Pandan. It has Dutch architecture from the colonial era and a harbour that is filled with multicolours. People work in mines and produce fishery products. The main source of income is palm oil. The Belitung Island is really a place filled with natural beauty. Among the offshore islands, Pulau Lengkuas has a lighthouse belonging to the 19th century. You can go for snorkeling among its coral reefs or enjoy a peaceful across the shore.
The island has a considerable Malay population, yet several languages are found here. It is filled with natural resources which help the locals to earn their living.
