Question 2.
Read the following text. (10)
1. Tourism, for millennia, has been a perpetual industry. Though initially unorganised and highly chaotic, it retained a place in each nook of history. The present tourism scenario in India is on the rise, with destinations grabbing eyeballs globally and domestically. Being the youngest nation in the world, it’s no wonder that the aggregate of ‘millennials’ spends more time and money on travel than previous generations. This could be huge for the economy of various states that rely majorly on tourism, if only it were sustainable.
2. Unsustainability prevails throughout the country, in states with higher domestic tourist inflow than foreign. The Dev Bhoomi is a prime example. No matter how popular, Uttarakhand tourism is loop-holed through and through.
3. Approx. 80% of tourists arrive to complete the infrastructure of the Dham Yatra. Such unchecked tourism puts immense pressure on natural and infrastructure facilities. The extreme shortage of accommodation in correspondence with thriving footfalls has led to the construction of illegal buildings, the majority of which exist on riverbanks. With an increasing number of tourists coming in through private vehicles to save “transportation money”, pollution levels are rising, increasing temperatures in return. With unlawful construction and pollution on riverbanks, the Ganges could cause direct harm to local species in Rishikesh and Haridwar.
4. Around 10,000 hilly areas are being convened for the construction of roads alone. We know roads are basic infrastructure but the Forest Conservation Act requires a project developer to plant trees in a non-forest/degraded forest area equal to or twice the trees, it’s clearing respectively, to compensate which does not happen.
5. The India State of Forest Report illustrates how Uttarakhand is losing its forest cover, which has indirect development through tourism, at its core. The government and private tour operators may think they can deny allegations but the charts speak for themselves.
6. We, as consumers of the tourism industry, hold the power to cause a massive stir in this context. According to research conducted, Uttarakhand’s mass tourism comprises people between 25-35 years of age, with higher education, out with either family or friends and enough average income to contribute to the local economy.
7. Regardless of what the figures say, if we look forward to sustainable tourism being the target market, it leaves little choice to the rest of the hierarchy. Consciously making efforts to be responsible tourists and thinking of how to provide for the local community/environment in a way – tiny or big, could act as a catalyst in obliterating this ruckus due to ignorance. After all, there can only ever be seven deadly sins and wanderlust isn’t one of them.
Answer the following questions, based on the passage above.
(i) Complete the following sentence appropriately. (1)
According to the passage, wanderlust is equated to reach the level of the seven deadly sins because ……………… .
Answer:
it include selfish and uncaring acts by tourists.
(ii) Fill in the blanks with the appropriate option from those given in brackets. (l)

Answer:
unchecked tourism
(iii) Justify the following, in about 40 words. (2)
We, as consumers of the tourism industry, hold the power to cause a massive stir.
Answer:
The given statement is correct as the data shows that the mass tourism of Uttarakhand comprises youth between 25 – 35 years of age, with higher education and an income that could support the local economy. If these tourists become responsible tourists and make conscious efforts to help the local community and environment, the negative impact of tourism could be decreased substantially.
(iv) How does the unchecked tourism in Uttarakhand affect the natural landscape? (1)
Answer:
The unchecked tourism in Uttarakhand has a great negative impact on its ecology and environment.
(v) Unsustainability prevails in Dev Bhoomi. List any two reasons for the same. (2)

(a) unchecked number of tourists causing stress on infrastructure.

(c) Option 3
(d) None of these
Answer:

(vii) Infer one consequence, based on your understanding of the passage, that highlights the result of the pressures of a large number of tourists.

Subject: Evoking Awareness Towards Solar Energy
Sir/Ma’am
Through the columns of your reputed newspaper, I wish to make the people aware of the growing need and demand for solar power. We all know that our Earth is: showing signs of a patient in declining health. We also know that such a condition of the Earth is a result of the excessive pollution on our planet. Man in his desire to live a luxurious life is over-consuming electricity. He doesn’t realize that its overuse would exhaust the natural treasure so fast that our future will fall in jeopardy. We must conserve electricity which is the need of the hour.
However, this conversation can only be done if we start using solar power systems. Various kinds of solar systems like solar cookers, solar lanterns, solar heating and cooking systems, solar water heaters, etc. are available in the market. These solar systems are non-polluting, economical, and are available in different sizes.
The only thing needed is for people to be aware of the need to conserve electricity and limit electricity bills. The public must pay attention to the dire need to switch over to solar energy.
Thanking you
Yours sincerely

Question 5.
(A) The charts below show agricultural production in two different regions of the country. Write an analytical paragraph in 100-120 words by selecting and reporting the main features, and making comparisons where relevant. [5]
Answer:
A clear cut comparison of the percentage of agricultural products from both the eastern and western regions of a particular country is portrayed in the given pie charts. Overall, it is clear that except in the case of meat products, the proportion of production is dissimilar in both regions. Turning to the share of agro-production in the eastern part of the country, meat stands first, with just over a third of the total (35%). Though the western region too produces the exact proportion of meat, grains occupy the topmost position there, which accounts for nearly half of the total production share (45%). When dairy products are the second most produced in the east, with 30% of the aggregate, the western region produces only its half. The gross share of vegetables and grains in the east account for 35%, with 20 and 15% respectively. The least recorded rate of agro-product in both regions is 5; in the case of vegetables and that is in the western region.

(B) Given below is a newspaper report on the state of cancer prevailing in India. You have been asked to write an analytical paragraph on ‘Cancer – a silent killer’ Taking information from the clipping given below together with your own ideas, write this paragraph in 100-120 words. “In India, cities are more cancer-prone than rural areas. In the early 1990’s, we expected one out of 10- 15 urban Indians to get cancer in their lifetime, that is every second or third family would have to face this disease. This is partly due to high levels of benzene in the air and also that the metros are exposed tohigh levels of pesticides in their foods. In order to check the steady growth of cancer in the country, the Government shall have to give priority to preventive action. At the same time measures to undertake improvement in facilities for the treatment of cancer shall have to be adopted.” [5]
Answer:
It is a matter of concern that our urban population has become cancer-prone more than the rural population. It is very sad that every tenth person is likely to have cancer. It is due to high level of benzene in the air. It is also due to the high levels of pesticides in the foods. Also, highly radioactive waves of the cell-phones etc., have also contributed to this grave danger to human population. To check this menace of cancer, the Government shall have to give top-most priority to preventive actions. More facilities like Diagnostic Centers and Cancer Hospitals need to be created for the treatment of cancer patients. There is a dire need to contain this deadly disease by taking some urgent steps. First of all, we must ban the wide use of the pesticides. Excessive use of pesticides is really harmful for human health. In the developed countries, much emphasis is being laid on organic manure instead of the fertilizer. So we have to introduce organic manure. Then, the crop pattern needs to be changed. Besides this, a kind of public awareness program will have to be undertaken. Public is to be awakened towards the growth of cancer and its easy detection. This would surely help in the containing of this disease at its initial stages. If cancer is detected and treated at the early stages, it can’t be fatal.

(v) What difference do you find between Robert Frost and other nature poets?
Answer concerning the poem ‘Dust of snow’.
Answer:
All other nature poets are known for describing well-known beautiful things. They usually describe a nightingale, a cuckoo, a snow-covered mountain, etc. But, Robert Frost has described a crow and a hemlock tree-symbols that are generally considered negative. Frost’s selection of negative images indicates his belief that every object in nature is beautiful. Such a unique thought makes him different from other poets.

Answer ANY ONE of the following two question, in about 100-120 words. (1 × 6 = 6)
A. You have been asked to write an evaluation of the approach used by Valli for fulfilling her wish of travelling in a bus. Write this presentation draft including your insights in about 120 words.
Or
B. You have been chosen to address a gathering to speak on the topic ‘Extreme behaviour can hasten the end of the world’. Prepare the speech draft in not more than 120 words, with reference to the poem ‘Fire and Ice’.
You may begin this way:
Good morning, everyone
Today I’d like to discuss a poem that highlights the fact that extreme behaviour can hasten the end of the world.
Answer:
A. In ‘Madam Rides the Bus’, Valli fulfilled her wish of travelling in a bus by escaping from her house without informing her mother. In my opinion, Valli did not do the right thing in travelling alone to the town without her mother’s consent. By doing this, she put herself in an unsafe position as she could have easily been a victim of child abuse if she came in contact with the wrong people. She was lucky to return home safely.
Children should always travel along with their parents or elders as they are easy target for criminals. We hear a lot of instances of crimes committed against children like kidnapping, molestation, rape, etc. Valli could have expressed her desire of travelling in a bus to her mother. I am sure that her mother would have fulfilled her wish by taking her on a bus ride.
Or
B. Good morning, everyone
Today I’d like to discuss a poem titled ‘Fire and Ice’ that highlights the fact that extreme behaviour can hasten the end of the world. The poet points out the two different views regarding the end of the world and associates the extreme behaviours to it.
The first view is fire which symbolises deep emotions of desire, passion, etc. Desire, according to the poet, can become so intense that it can make people lose their calmness. Firs of desires, if left uncontrolled, can lead to the distruction of humanity as well as the world.
The other view is ice which represents hatred, differentiation and insensitivity. Hatred and rigidity give rise to contempt. It can end all positive human emotions such as warmth, love and sympathy and can bring death to this world.
So, we should all remain cautions and refrain from indulging in these behaviours.
Thank You!

Dear Diary
Today I felt much satisfied as I got success in changing Bholi to Sulekha. As her name signifies, Bholi was a simple girl. I can’t forget her first entry in my class. A frightened, confused, and simple girl was her first appearance. She used to stammer while speaking. But my two words of affection filled her with confidence. But my two words of affection filled her with confidence. She left stammering and became a confident, determined girl. She was determined to learn everything silently. In her family, nobody noticed the changes that took place in her personality and got her engaged to a fifty years old lame man with two children. She kept the honor of her parents and agreed to this marriage. But she couldn’t stand the demand of dowry. She threw away her garland in the fire and asked her father to take back the money. She raised her voice against dowry. She asked the ladies of the village why girls should be treated like dumb cows.
This was the change I always wanted to see in her personality. Today I feel I have completed my masterpiece
without any error. Today she signified her real name, Sulekha.
